Abstract

The seamless convergence of edge and cloud computing has emerged as a pivotal framework for managing large-scale data processing requirements in modern Internet of Things ecosystems. As smart city applications evolve, an increasing volume of real-time sensor data, high-resolution video streams, and contextual information must be analyzed with low latency to enable intelligent decision-making. At the same time, cloud infrastructures remain indispensable for long-term storage, historical analytics, and resource-intensive computational tasks. Fog computing offers an intermediate layer that augments the edge-to-cloud continuum and delivers context-sensitive intelligence at strategic points in the network. Balancing the location of services across the edge, fog, and cloud is critical for maximizing operational efficiency, improving scalability, and minimizing latency. A significant challenge lies in the design of dynamic task allocation and resource management strategies that are capable of adapting to fluctuating workloads and ensuring optimal quality of service. Recent developments in distributed systems engineering have demonstrated the potential of combining container-based virtualization with fine-grained orchestration techniques to yield robust and flexible deployment scenarios. Advanced data analytics frameworks capable of supporting machine learning, real-time streaming, and batch processing are increasingly integrated into this continuum. This work presents an extensive discussion of how edge and cloud architectures can be harmoniously blended with fog computing to enhance big data processing within IoT-enabled smart city environments. In particular, it addresses issues related to efficient system design, optimized resource utilization, and future research directions for large-scale deployments.
