Abstract

Carbon pricing mechanisms play a crucial role in global efforts to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions and combat climate change. While these mechanisms have primarily targeted the energy and transportation sectors, their significance in shaping agricultural practices is increasingly apparent, given the substantial contribution of agriculture to global emissions and its reliance on land use. This paper offers a multidimensional evaluation of carbon pricing instruments—such as carbon taxes, cap-and-trade schemes, and hybrid models—and examines their effectiveness in driving more sustainable agricultural practices. By analyzing the environmental, economic, and technological dimensions of these instruments, we aim to determine how carbon pricing can not only reduce emissions but also incentivize practices that enhance soil health, preserve water resources, and reduce chemical inputs. We explore how pricing signals influence farm-level decision-making, highlighting the importance of appropriate carbon quantification, robust monitoring and verification protocols, and transparent pricing structures. Additionally, we assess the role of emerging technologies—ranging from advanced remote sensing to data-driven analytics—in facilitating more accurate and cost-effective emissions monitoring. Ultimately, we find that carbon pricing, when carefully designed and complemented by supportive policies, can create a virtuous cycle of environmental stewardship, resource efficiency, and rural economic resilience. This multidimensional evaluation aims to guide policymakers, agricultural stakeholders, and researchers in refining and adopting carbon pricing mechanisms that nurture a more sustainable agricultural future.
